Prevent Parental Child Abduction
Review our information for parents who are concerned that another parent will abduct their child abroad.
Enroll in the Children's Passport Issuance Alert Program
Enrolling in the Children's Passport Issuance Alert Program (CPIAP) helps prevent child abduction. When you enroll in the program, we will alert you if your child has a pending U.S. passport application, or if your child received a U.S. passport until your child turns 18.
Information about a child's passport is available to both parents. The only exception is when a court ended the rights of the parent requesting to be in CPIAP.
Revoking your child's passport
We issue U.S. passports based on the evidence we receive at the time an individual applies. If a parent or legal guardian withdraws consent for their child to have a passport after we issue it, we cannot change the validity period of the passport or cancel it.
State courts can order a parent or guardian to surrender a child's passport. The court may hold the passport to prevent the child's abduction to another country.
If you want to prevent your child from getting another passport, or if the other parent or guardian fraudulently got your consent, email PreventAbduction1@state.gov or dial 1-888-407-4747.
Preventing foreign passport issuance
Enrolling in CPIAP does not stop your child from getting or traveling with a foreign passport. Contact the country's embassy or consulate if you are concerned about your child getting or using a foreign passport.
Getting your child's passport records
Parents or legal guardians may request their child's passport records. Follow the steps on Get Copies of Passport Records.
