Passports and Religious Accommodations

You may submit a request for a religious accommodation with your application as part of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. A religious accommodation is a change to a specific part of the application process which lets you practice your religious beliefs. 

To request an accommodation, you must submit a signed statement with your application. The statement must:

  • Explain how and why your religious beliefs make it difficult for you to complete a specific part of the application process.
  • Detail your religious activity or exercise and how it connects to your religious beliefs.

We will review requests on a case-by-case basis. 

If we grant your request and you meet the requirements for a passport, we will issue your passport. If we do not grant your request, we will mail you a letter and explain what you need to provide to apply for your passport.
