To support the viability of intercountry adoption as a permanency option for children in Austria, the Office of Children’s Issues and the U.S. Embassy in Vienna sought information from the Austrian Central Authority regarding its legal requirements for the authorization of adoption service providers (ASP), pursuant to Article 12 of the Hague Adoption Convention.

Austria ratified the Hague Convention on the Protection of Children and Cooperation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption (Convention) on May 19, 1999 and it entered into force on September 1, 1999.

Austria ​does not currently accredit foreign agencies ​on a nation-wide basis, including U.S. adoption service providers. Agencies accredited in the U.S. may contact the ​relevant Austrian provincial authorities to arrange an adoption.
