What fees should I pay?

I'm an adult (16 and older) and I'm applying for the first time

You will need to pay both an application fee and an acceptance fee. Pay the acceptance fee to the facility which takes your application, and the application fee to the U.S. Department of State.

My child is under 16 and I'm applying for his or her passport

All children must apply in person. You will need to pay both an application fee and an acceptance fee when applying for your child. Pay the acceptance fee to the facility which takes your child's application, and the application fee to the U.S. Department of State.

  • Available for eligible U.S. citizens living in Canada who renew by mail.

We do not charge a fee to make an appointment. If you are asked to pay for an appointment, you should consider the request to be fraudulent.

1-2 Day Delivery  $19.53
  • You will receive your passport 1-2 days after we send it.
  • Include the fee in your check or money order payable to the U.S. Department of State for fastest return shipping.
  • Do not submit a return envelope to us with postage pre-paid.
  • Note: We do not offer this service for customers applying for a passport card only. We send cards via First Class Mail.

We accept different forms of payment depending on where you apply

Applying at a Passport Acceptance Facility (Post Office, Government Office, Library)

Go to our Apply In Person page to find the steps to apply.

You will need to pay both an application fee and an acceptance fee. Pay the acceptance fee to the facility which takes your application, and the application fee to the U.S. Department of State.

To pay for the application and special services such as expediting your application:

  • Submit a check (personal, certified, cashier's, traveler's) or money order payable to "U.S. Department of State"
  • You cannot pay using a credit or debit card.
  • Do not cancel your check or money order after you have applied.

To pay the separate $35 fee to the acceptance facility, contact your acceptance facility to learn what form of payment they will accept. Please note customers who want to apply at a post office must make an appointment directly on USPS.com. Some locations accept: 

  • Personal checks and money orders
  • Credit cards. Note: the facility may add a surcharge to cover the cost of the credit card transaction.
  • Cash (exact amount only)

Renewing by Mail

If you are renewing by mail:

  • Send us a check (personal, certified, cashier's, traveler's) or money order payable to "U.S. Department of State"
  • Do not cancel your check or money order after you have applied as you may have to pay additional fees.
  • When renewing by mail from Canada, you must pay by check or money order payable in U.S. dollars through a U.S. bank.

Applying or Renewing at a Passport Agency

Pay using a credit or debit card.

  • Credit cards: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover
  • Debit cards (or prepaid cards that are not linked to a line of credit or bank account): Visa or Mastercard
You can pay with a digital wallet such as Apple, Google, or Samsung Pay. 

You cannot pay with cash, or a check or money order.
