Refund of Expedite Passport Fee

Service Commitment

Our expedited service commitment is to process your passport application within 20 business days from the date we receive your application at a passport agency or center (or from the date you request expedited service). This means if you applied for expedited service on or after September 28, 2020 you should have received your passport or a letter requesting more information in approximately 4-6 weeks door-to-door if you requested expedited service. If you did not receive your passport or a letter requesting more information in this time period, you can request a refund of the $60 expedited service fee. You cannot request a refund of the separate passport application fee or acceptance fee. 

Request a refund of the expedite fee, if:

  • You paid the $60 fee for expedite service when you applied, and
  • You have reason to believe that you did not receive expedited service.  

If you applied at a passport acceptance facility or through the mail, your application should arrive at a passport agency or center approximately 7-10 days later. Go to our Application Status page for more information.

How long will it take to process my refund request?

Expect delays receiving your refund as our agencies and centers resume operations in three phases. Please do not submit a second, duplicate request for your refund because it will delay processing your original request.

IMPORTANT NOTE: We consider refund requests on a case-by-case basis. We cannot refund passport execution fees, nor refund missed travel. We cannot refund passport application fees except in very limited circumstances outlined in 22 C.F.R. § 51.53(a).
