COVID-19 Update: Safely Working for You

September 8, 2020

To prevent the spread of COVID-19 and protect our workforce and customers, we significantly reduced passport operations in March 2020. We have temporarily suspended expedited passport processing for customers applying at an acceptance facility or renewing by mail. At our passport agencies and centers, we have restricted in person service and expedited passport processing to cases involving life-or-death emergencies. As global conditions evolve and U.S. states begin to reopen, we are resuming operations in phases. We ask for your patience as we safely work on your application.

As of Tuesday, September 8, a total of 11 passport agencies and centers are in phase two, and 15 agencies and centers are in phase one of our three-phase reopening plan. Go to our Passport Agency and Center page for more information.

You can apply at an acceptance facility or renew by mail now, but unless you have a life-or-death emergency, you will experience delays before receiving your passport and the return of your citizenship documents such as previous passports, and birth and naturalization certificates.

How to Apply at a Passport Agency

1. Find out if you're eligible

2. Collect all your application materials

We have an online form filler so you can fill out your form and print it before you arrive for your appointment. You can also print a PDF of your form and complete your form by hand in blue or black ink before you arrive. Both these options reduce the amount of time you spend in our lobby on the day of your appointment. While we have forms available in our lobby, we ask that you bring your own blue or black ink pen to protect the health of other customers and our employees.
  • Appointment confirmation number
  • Printed proof of international travel
    • If you are flying internationally, you must provide a flight receipt or an itinerary. If you are traveling by land or sea to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, or the Caribbean, you can provide a hotel reservation, cruise tickets, or international car insurance.
  • Completed form(s)*
  • All required supporting documents*
  • One passport photo
  • Application fee and expedite fee. We accept:
    • Major credit cards
    • Debit/Check card (not ATM cards)
    • Cash (exact amount only- no change provided)
    • Checks
    • Bank Draft or Money order
  • If you are applying for a child under 16, both parents and child must be present to apply. You must submit documentation that shows parental relationship to that of the child applying for a passport.  See Children Under 16 for a full list of requirements and documents.

3. Make an appointment

You must make an appointment to apply at a passport agency. Be sure to write down your appointment confirmation number.

4. Arrive early to your appointment

Anyone over 10 years of age must wear a face mask or face covering to enter the building. Temperature will be taken prior to entry. Only the applicant (and/or parents, if applicant is a minor child) will be allowed into the agency to apply for the passport.
  1. We suggest you arrive no sooner than 15 minutes of your appointment to go through security screening. Weapons, food, and drinks (except water in a sealable bottle) are not allowed in the agency.
  2. After leaving the security screening area, proceed to the elevators, our office is located on the 4th floor. 
  3. Check in at the Information Desk. Give them your appointment confirmation number and make sure you have the required documents.
  4. You will be given further instructions regarding if you will wait or go to the passport office. 

Please note: We may not see you exactly at your appointment time. An appointment does not guarantee that you will receive a passport. Once we review your documents, we'll give you instructions on your next steps. Please complete your application before arriving but do not sign it. Bring photocopies of your citizenship and ID documents, a passport photo, and proof of international travel. If you don't have these items when you arrive, your application process will be delayed.

Parking Information

There are several parking locations in close proximity to the George Thomas "Mickey" Leland Federal Building. Most fees average $10. Additionally, there is metered parking available behind the building (on Pierce St).

Travel Advisory for States

  • In response to increased rates of COVID-19 transmission, several states and cities have placed travel advisories for anyone traveling from states that have a significant degree of community-wide spread of COVID-19.
  • The travel advisories may require travelers to self-quarantine for 14 days. Additionally, exceptions may apply for transiting through the state by car, train, bus, or airplane.
  • Customers who schedule an appointment at an agency/center that is located out of state should check for travel advisories of the state where the passport agency/center is located.
