Passports and Unpaid Federal Taxes

Seriously delinquent tax debt is your unpaid, federal tax debt which includes interest and penalties.

If the Secretary of the Treasury let us know you have seriously delinquent tax debt, we cannot issue a U.S. passport to you. We may also revoke your valid U.S. passport.

If you are in a foreign country, you may be eligible for a limited-validity passport for direct return to the United States.

Follow the guidance on the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) website to resolve your debt. If you do not, we will delay or deny your passport application.
