The Affidavit of Support (AOS) is a legal contract required by U.S. law between the petitioner (sponsor) of an immigrant visa applicant and the U.S. government. It ensures that the visa applicant has adequate means of financial support and is unlikely to become a public charge after entering the United States. The sponsor for the prospective immigrant must establish he or she has the means to financially support the intending immigrant(s), if necessary. For full information about Affidavit of Support requirements, forms, and whether an Affidavit of Support is required for you, review Affidavit of Support on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website.
The NVC will send the sponsor (petitioner) an Affidavit of Support (AOS) processing service fee invoice, which must be paid before the case can be processed further. After fee payment, the sponsor must complete, sign, and submit the applicable Affidavit of Support form, or ask the principal applicant to submit a claim of exemption.
If you have paid the Affidavit of Support (AOS) fee, you are ready for the next step. Visit the I-864 Affidavit of Support FAQs to learn which form you must use.
The NVC will not request an Affidavit of Support from you if:
If you believe the Affidavit of Support requirement applies to your immigrant visa case and you have not been requested to complete an Affidavit of Support, you should contact the NVC.
