Apply Early

Prepare now for your 2020 vacation. You'll save money, time & reduce stress before your trip next year.

Find a Passport Month Event this September near you and apply now.

September is Passport Month. Hundreds of special events will be hosted nationwide so that you can submit your passport application easily. First time applicants or families with school-age children, find a Saturday event and apply in-person more conveniently.

Most people apply for a passport at the last minute – only a few weeks before a vacation. People realize their passport is expired only days before a trip or, even worse, at the airport, which will cancel your trip. You can prevent that headache. Apply this fall when fewer people need passports, so processing times are quick and you do not need to pay extra fees to rush your passport. Your journey begins with your passport application. #BeginYourJourney

Tips for Your U.S. Passport:

  • Plan ahead! Save $60 per application by choosing routine service (4-6 weeks processing time) instead of expedited service (2-3 weeks processing time).
  • Processing times are shorter from September through December. If you apply during that time, you will likely get your passport faster.
  • You can conveniently renew your passport by mail if you meet the criteria.
  • Review the entry/exit requirements for your destination now. Many countries require U.S. passports to have at least 6 months of validity and some require two blank pages for entry.
  • Check all passport expiration dates. Remember that a child's passport is valid for 5 years, while an adult's passport is valid for 10 years.

Renew by Mail:

  • Submit your passport renewal by mail at anytime on form DS-82.
  • You must be able to submit your most recent, full-validity passport.
  • See the full list of criteria to renew your passport by mail.
  • Routine and expedited services are both offered.

Apply in Person:

  • You must apply in person if you:
  • There are more than 8,000 authorized passport acceptance facilities where you can apply in person. Find one near you.
  • Children under 16 years old must apply in person. See their requirements and separate requirements for 16 and 17 year olds.
  • Routine and expedited services are both offered.
