Documents

Birth Certificates

Available. The birth certificate (Geburtsschein, Geburtsurkunde or Acte de naissance) is obtainable from the Standesamt or Etat Civil. The records are complete for more than the past 100 years. There may be a fee for this service.

Adoption Certificates

Available. Requests should be addressed to the city hall where the adoption was recorded. There may be a fee for this service.

Marriage Certificates

Available. May be obtained from the Standesamt or Etat Civil. There may be a fee for this service.

Divorce Certificates

Available. Requests should be addressed to the registrar of the city hall of the judicial district in which the divorce was granted. The name of the petitioner and the name of the respondent should be supplied, as well as the date of the divorce. There may be a fee for this service.

Death Certificates

Available. Certificate is issued by the Mayor's office in the community where the death took place. There may be a fee for this service.

Note: These documents are issued on a standard form bearing the signature of the responsible issuing official and the rubber seal of the appropriate office.

Police Records

Available. Police and prison records ('Extrait de Casier Judiciaire') are available. Records are issued upon application at the Palais de Justice, Parquet General, 12, Cote d'Eich, L-1450 Luxembourg, Tel: +(352) 47-59 81-436. Opening hours are 8:30 - 11:30 and 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Records are issued immediately and are free of charge if the record is negative. Individuals outside of Luxembourg can request records by mail. The letter should state the purpose for which the record is being requested along with a copy of the applicant's identification card or passport.

Prison Records

Unavailable except as incorporated in the police record. The police record states the period of imprisonment to which the subject was sentenced but gives no information on the length of time he or she actually served or the person's conduct during imprisonment.

Certificate of Good Conduct

Available. The Leumundszeugnis or Certificat de bonne conduite is issued by the police authorities and, in smaller communities, by the Mayor's office. There may be a fee for this service.

Military Records

Available. Certificate is issued by the Mayor's office in the community where the residence took place. There may be a fee for this service.
