Documents

Birth Certificates

Available. Acta de nacimiento may be obtained from any office of Registro Nacional de las Personas where birth occurred. In Honduras, civil law legitimation occurs when both parents agree to recognize the child. Marriage is not needed. There may be a fee for this service.

Adoption Certificates

Available. Copies of adoption decree (sentencia) may be obtained from the Secretary of the Court where the adoption was approved. Adoption has been legally possible in Honduras only since 1965.

Note: There is no centralized system of civil records in Honduras except for police records. Civil documents are recorded in the Registro Nacional de las Personas where the act occurred.

Marriage Certificates

Acta de Matrimonio may be obtained from Registro Nacional de las Personas where marriage occurred. Only civil marriage is legally recognized; religious documents have no civil value. There may be a fee for this service.

Divorce Certificates

Available. Copies of divorce decree (sentencia) may be obtained from the Secretary of the Court where the divorce was granted or from Registro Nacional de las Personas where divorce occurred if divorce was registered in Libro de Divorcios. There may be a fee for this service.

Death Certificates

Available. Same manner of securing as for other documents.

Police and Prison Records

Available. Hoja de Antecedentes may be obtained from the Direccion General de Investigactiones Criminales (DGIC). Some records may be available at local DGIC offices, but the most complete records are housed at DGIC headquarters in Tegucigalpa. Applicant must request the document in person and present a Honduran identification card, a copy of the card, and a letter of request addressed to the Director of the DGIC. Applicants under 18 years of age must present their birth certificate in lieu of the identification card. For persons living outside of Honduras, a lawyer or close family member can apply for the record by presenting a copy of the applicant's identification, a letter of authorization, and the letter of request. Normal processing time is less than one week. Police records from before 1995 may not be available. There may be a fee for this service.

Military Records

Unavailable.

Passport and Other Travel Documents

  • Diplomatic Passport: There are two versions of the diplomatic passport. Both have a soft black cover embossed in gold with "Pasaporte Diplomatico" inscribed at the bottom. One has the seal of Honduras on the cover and 50 blue pages while the other version has a map of Central America on the cover and 50 blue pages. Validity is normally for three years or "for however long the bearer is carrying out his duties".
  • Official Passport: The official passport has a soft blue cover, "Pasaporte Oficial" inscribed at the bottom and either the Seal of Honduras or a map of Central America, all embossed in gold. The passport has 50 blue pages. Validity is either for three years or "for however long the bearer is carrying out his duties."
  • Regular Passport: The two versions of the regular passport have soft blue covers and have either the Seal of Honduras or a map of Central America embossed in gold. It has 50 blue pages, and its validity is for five or ten years.
  • Emergency Passport: Is a regular passport that has been specially annotated as an "emergency passport" on pages 2 and 5. The regular passport number on pages 2 and 4 has been inked out and replaced by a handwritten one. Validity on page 5 is limited to one year. This passport is usually issued to residents of Honduras who are citizens of another country, but are unable to obtain a valid travel document from that country. The emergency passport is annotated as such and is most often issued to nationals of Cuba.
  • Note: it can also be issued to refugees and stateless persons.
  • Special Travel Permit: A white page (8"x14") sheet with the seal and heading of the Honduran Immigration Office (Dirrecion General de Poblacion). The permit has a photo of the bearer affixed with the immigration office wet seal. It is usually issued to refugees and persons paroled into Honduras and who do not have residency status. The permit is good for one trip only, it notes specifically the countries for which it is valid for travel, and its validity is rarely for more than six months.
