Documents
Birth Certificates
Available. A birth certificate (udostoverenie za razhdane) may be obtained from the district municipality that has jurisdiction over the place of birth. The certificate is an extract or summary of data in Civil Register.
Marriage Certificates
Marriage certificates are available and may be obtained from the municipalities.
Divorce Certificates
The court that granted the divorce will issue the divorce decree. If the court records are not available, the court may issue an official document showing the date a court decree came into effect and the names of both parties to whom the divorce was granted.
Persons not physically present in Bulgaria may apply for the required documents through Bulgarian diplomatic or consular offices abroad.
Police Records
Unavailable. Immigrant visa applicants are required to submit court certificates instead, which show whether the applicant has ever been convicted in Bulgaria (see Court Records).
Court Records
Available. Court records (svidetelstvo za sudimost) are issued by the respective district courts to persons born in Bulgaria. Persons born outside of Bulgaria must file an application with the Ministry of Justice. The application must contain full identifying data and should be accompanied by a birth certificate. Applicants residing outside Bulgaria may obtain court certificates through Bulgarian diplomatic or consular offices abroad. Bulgarian court certificates are valid for six months.
Military Records
Unavailable. A military booklet (voenna knishka) is issued to every person who has completed military service. It contains a record of the duration of service and the applicant’s conduct while in the service. If an applicant has been convicted by a military tribunal while serving in the army, the conviction is recorded in the civilian court record (see Court Records).
Passport and Other Travel Documents
Bulgaria began issuing four new types of passports in 1999:
- Regular: It has a maroon cover and is issued by the Ministry of the Interior.
- Diplomatic: It has a dark blue cover and is issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- Official: It has a green cover and is issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- Seaman's Passport: It has a light blue cover and is issued by the Ministry of Transport.
All four passports have gold lettering on the front that says "Republic of Bulgaria" and the type of passport in both Cyrillic and Latin letters. The passports are valid for five years.
