Documents

Birth, Marriage, Divorce and Death Certificates

Most civil documents are available and reasonably reliable. There are some villages where records may have been destroyed in World War II. Documents may appear crude and simplistic, but that is what is in use within the country. There does not appear to be any restriction on sending the documents abroad.

Police Records

Currently, to obtain a criminal document from the District Attorney's office concerning pending and final criminal and civil cases, one needs to go to the District Attorney's office in the district of their residence, present an ID and pay the necessary fee.

To obtain a document from the District Court concerning any active court cases, one needs to go to the District Court office in one's district of their residence, present and ID and pay the necessary fee.

Applicants must apply for a criminal court certificate through the Post Office by submitting a birth certificate and paying the necessary fee. Certificates can be picked up at the Post Office starting three work days after the application to one week.

Military Records

Available. The Albanian Military certificate is available to Albanian males who are eighteen years of age or older and who have completed military service.

Applicants who served as enlisted military members should apply to the recruiting office (“Zyra e Mobilizim-Rekrutimit”) of the district where they are registered.

All Albanians who served as military officers can request their records (official CV) through the Ministry of Defense Human Resources Department.

Passport and Other Travel Documents

Albanian passports are recognized as official travel documents for visa issuance and admission into the United States.

All diplomatic and service passports issued prior to August 1, 1997 expired on September 10, 1997. Diplomatic and service passports, whose bearers are outside of Albania, expired on October 10, 1997.

As of May 15, 1998, Albanian passports will include a second page with a plastic coating containing four sky-blue double-headed eagles and the words REPUBLIKA E SHQIPERISE (Republic of Albania).

Previously issued passports remain valid for the period noted on the photo page.
